CSCA May 2023 surf casting tournament

Saturday was a test for casters as stagnant humidity hung over the casting court for most of the day, and crosswinds and headwinds came into to play sporadically later in the afternoon. For those seeking “personal bests”, it was a challenging weekend. Competition-wise, senior casters John Mroczka and Butch Lloyd slugged it out with just 31 feet between them by the end of the day.

By Saturday afternoon, predictions were coming in of 10-15 MPH winds on Sunday morning, so most casters strategically took their foot off the pedal to reserve their energy. It paid off… a little. Scores improved Sunday, but casters like Ryan Lambert were mystified by the stubbornly low numbers over all. By noon, the opportunity had mostly closed and crosswinds prevailed again.

Perhaps owing to the surf fishing season being in full swing now, all of the casters appeared to be in top form. Mroczka widened his lead over Lloyd on Sunday; Tommy Farmer casted within 20 feet of current-top-5 US caster Goddy Ferrer; Lambert, who switched to a flat-arc pendulum cast on Sunday, would have at least been casting in the high 800s in another place and time. He still led the entire group by 40 feet.
