Windsor, VA – Sixteen long distance surf casters from around the East Coast gathered at Heritage Park for the August 23 and 24 Carolina Surf Casters Association surf casting competition. Just two days prior to the event, strong gusts from Hurricane Erin were blasting through the region. By Friday evening, all was quiet, and hopes for personal-best scores evaporated. But this was a competition, after all, and all but one class of athletes had multiple casters vying for their class’s top spot.
When all was said and done, John Mroczka fended off a pool of new casters like Northeasterners Tom Troy and Bruce Yarnell, as well as regular Butch Lloyd, to win the Senior class.
Newcomer Mekhi Carter Davis took home the “B” class title with a powerful Hatteras cast. Another first-time competitive caster, Sean Sprague, flew by his rivals in the “AA” class.
Bobby Rae Allen and Jordan Bray went head-to-head in the “AAA” class, with Allen edging past his more experienced competition by less than eight feet.
In the “Elite” class, another friendly rivalry unfolded as USA Surf Casting Team member Conner Brown bested team mate Ryan Lambert in the 150 gram sinker category, but lost the title to Lambert as he blasted the 125 gram sinker out over 800 feet, despite the grueling heat and humidity.
Gratitude is in order for Butch Lloyd, who once again provided lunch on both days of competition… home-cooked pulled chicken breast barbeque sandwiches. The CSCA would also like to thank its members who graciously assisted with event logistics, as well as the club’s partner businesses: Carolina CastPro, One More Cast (who provides the CSCA’s official tournament sinkers), Breakaway Tackle USA, and Reel Kustom Reels.
