On October 19 and 20th, the Carolina Surf Casters Association hosted their final surf casting competition of the year in their stomping grounds at Heritage Park in Windsor, Virginia. Both days of competition saw high pressure weather conditions and a stable and slow northeast wind topping out at 8 mph late Saturday morning, and even less on Sunday.
The casters in attendance were mostly of the Outer Banks surf fishing variety, compared to the CSCA’s South Carolina venue. Hatteras heavers and Hatteras casts made their distinctive appearances
Two newcomers to CSCA events were Dee Burritt and Bobby Rae Allen. Dee, a tournament angler with the Blackbeard’s Babes surf fishing team came to learn the ropes of long casting with conventional reels. She soon found herself embroiled in the competitive spirit of surf casting as well, insisting that she would not leave the casting court until she had cast 400’. She landed at 333’, which was remarkable enough of an achievement.
Bobby Rae Allen was equally impressive, starting the weekend with fishing tackle and landing just over 300’… then borrowing Conner Brown’s full tournament equipment and reaching out to nearly 700’ with a visibly powerful ground cast. He left Windsor as a bonafide “AAA” class competitor.
Nevertheless, Jordan Bray also found himself to be a “AAA” caster by the end of the tournament, edging past Bobby Rae by mere feet.
Elite class caster Conner Brown was the overall winner of the event with more mind-blowing distances in the 175 gram sinker category. He continues his march to Argentina, host nation for the 2025 FIPS-Mer Long Distance Casting World Championships.
