Top Two East Coast Surf Casters Face Off Again at September Competition

Ryan Lambert adjusts magnetic braking mid-cast at CSCA September competition.

Diehard surf casters gathered in Green Sea, South Carolina on September 21–22 for the third Carolina Surf Casters Association competition of 2024. It was a bit of a toned-down affair as Fall surf fishing was ramping up in a big way at that moment on the beaches of the Carolinas.

The predicted wind for these two days of competition were modest… 2 to 5 miles per hour, according to forecasts.

Darren Squires Jr., a Myrtle Beach area native and brother-in-law of Conner Brown, kicked off the rounds. Continuing his use of the off-the-ground cast, Darren had at least one cast above 600 feet, which graduated him into the “AA” competitor level.

CSCA fixture Bob Babington from the Oak Island, North Carolina area was casting well over 500. That tends to reflect the power and skill level one needs to put baited rigs on the other side of the sandbars, with which Bob has much experience as a surf fisherman.

Ryan Lambert, CSCA Vice President and Program Director for USAngling’s Surf Casting Team was in the lead after day one of the contest, but he ended up handing the win to Conner Brown who scored a personal best with no less than a 175 gram sinker. Both “Elite” level casters were in top form for the weekend as they hone their skills in preparation for the 2025 FIPS-Mer Long Distance Casting World Championships.

A special thanks goes out to Grassy Bay Turf Farms for use of this weekend’s venue, Conner Brown for his volunteering spirit in assisting the CSCA, and to all our supporting businesses.
