Green Sea, SC – Nine die-hard competitors from the surf casting and surf fishing scenes gathered on a damp sod farm just west of the North Carolina border to make the most out of the final US surf casting tournament of the year.
The lack of wind suppressed any personal-best distances, as did temperatures in the 40s with intermittent rain. Saturday’s casting, in fact, was closed early due to inclement weather. Never the less, the weekend produced noteworthy appearances and accomplishments.
Jack and Pax King, two young surf fishing industry entrepreneurs, came to expand their horizons and gain a new perspective and new skills that would benefit their business, Bald Head Island Fishing Co.
Michelle Trotter paid the casting court a visit after a hiatus from the sport. She holds the US surf casting distance record for female casters, and to this day is number 2 in the world in recorded competition with a cast of 589’ in 2021. The new CSCA leadership, and the USA Surf Casting Team, was enthusiastic about seeing what Michele could do, and she indeed maintained distances well above the 500’ mark.
Sean Sprague had been documenting his frequent training sessions on social media since his first CSCA tournament in August. Once on the field, he nearly chased down Bobby Rae Allen, an up-and-coming powerhouse already in the AAA casting class.
Ryan Lambert broke away from the pack with the only cast over 800’ and took the title in the Elite class, and the tournament at large.
